A 10-year-old girl, suddenly stricken with an intestinal disorder that blocks evacuation, endures more graphic onscreen medical procedures than did Linda Blair in The Exorcist before a three-story tumble down the inside of a hollow tree trunk literally knocks the crap back into her. Or was it a miracle? One thing’s for certain. It was a miracle I got through this. And other than divine intervention, how are we to account for Affirm Films, Sony’s faith-based specialty division, convincing A-lister Jennifer Garner to star? It’s clear from the outset this fact-based family film will end happily. Other than Queen Latifah’s impromptu tour of Boston, there’s not a shred of surprise (or compelling melodrama) to be squeezed from this stony nugget of Church propaganda. Maybe, if we all pray hard enough, films like this will stay on television where they belong. With Eugenio Derbez and Bruce Altman bringing added tenderheartedness to their roles as compassionate caregivers, and the distinguished John Carroll Lynch co-starring as the pulpit’s answer to prop comedy.
