Borrowing both its title and premise from a pair of John Wayne movies, director Thomas Bidegain’s update of The Searchers swaps out the Comanche for Islamists as a vengeful father (François Damiens) goes in quest of a daughter who’s disappeared with her Arab boyfriend. It isn’t until Dad hits Antwerp that he dons a cowboy hat and begins puffing on hand-rolled smokes, but the pretense doesn’t give our buckaroo much added mileage. For those wondering why the plural title, a nifty second act reversal finds the Ethan Edwards character killed off, leaving the conclusion of the pursuit in the hands of his son (a frozen-faced Finnegan Oldfield). It’s about this time where Bidegain trades in his derringer for a scatter gun, resulting in a credibility-straining climax gone too far afield. And is it me, or does special guest star John Reilly appear to have stumbled in from another movie? (2016) — Scott Marks
