A documentary for those who find favor in Glee, Carol Burnett Show skits, and the tuneless components of ’30s musicals that showcase Mickey and Judy putting on a show in their own backyard. I don’t generally, but the titular nonagenarian and her annual quest to keep alive her own particular brand of corn-fed culture held my interest. For over a decade, Janey’s been turning the town of Rio Vista into one big community theater, putting on works that she writes, produces, directs, etc. For his first feature as a director, Jared Callahan — a name familiar to those on the local filmmaking scene for his work in both Short Term 12s, follows his grandmother, Janey Callahan-Chin, the 94-year-old retired preschool teacher who transforms the small American town as her own personal branch of central casting. As family fare goes, you’re not likely to find anything in a multiplex to rival it. (2016) — Scott Marks
