Amiable spoof of the Star Trek phenomenon (pre-reunion on the big screen), with names changed to protect the guilty. The most scrumptiously swallowable material has to do with the jostling egos of these former TV co-stars, chained to each other and to their old roles as they hobble around the convention circuit. More difficult to get down is the plot gambit whereby the cast is rounded up by actual aliens to deal with a spot of trouble in their own little corner of the universe. (They have modelled their civilization on the television shows, known to them as "historical documents," whose transmissions they have intercepted in outer space: intercepted, evidently, without credits or commercials or adjacent programs.) Enrico Colantoni helps this to go down with his heartstring-plucking portrayal of the trusting leader of the aliens. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell; directed by Dean Parisot. (1999) — Duncan Shepherd
