Grey Gardens
Hear about the reclusive Beales, holed up in an East Hampton "cottage" for over 25 years, and you expect Dickens's Havishams surrounded by spider webs. But the mother and daughter — of the Bouvier clan (i.e. Jacqueline Bouvier fame) — are inventive, funny, and deeply human. The eerie musical (book: Doug Wright; music, Scott Frankel; lyrics, Michael Korie) enjoys a terrific production at Ion Theatre. Linda Libby, Annie Hinton, and Charlene Koepf excel as Edith and "Little" Edie, backed by twin pianos and a fine supporting cast. Credit to director Kim Strassburger, who sees liberation, beyond any conventional sense of the word, where others might see mere decay. And to musical director Janie Prim, who can coax nostalgia even from unfamiliar songs.
