Why Do You Have Black Dolls?
6134 Benson Avenue, San Diego, 92114
The Reader's Scott Marks hosts a screening of the award-winning documentary Why Do You Have Black Dolls? followed by a discussion with the film’s director and producer Samantha Knowles.
The screening is held in conjunction with the Mengei Museum’s current exhibition, Black Dolls: From the Collection of Deborah Neff.
The exhibition -- on public display for the first time -- showcases a collection of 125 African-American dolls produced between 1850 and 1940. The film was inspired by a question posed to Knowles in her childhood. Her 25-minute documentary sheds light on the powerful stories and history of the little-known black doll community.
