Boulevard Banner Debut Celebration
Late night drive-in restaurants and drag races signify the good ole days of El Cajon Boulevard, but the most visual element of the Boulevard’s fabulous night life was the spectacular display of neon signs. To fill the void of lost neon signage, in 1989, just one year after the establishment of the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association, the Boulevard neon sign was erected to return the glory of big bright lights. City officials and local business leaders saw the sign as a major new landmark which would stimulate business along the Boulevard and encourage further community revitalization efforts. Twenty-five years later, quite a lot that has come of the Boulevard. To showcase the major contributions that have been made, brand new banners will be hung throughout the district, reflecting the four themes which that proudly showcase The Boulevard: Cruise the Boulevard, Dine on the Boulevard, Rock the Boulevard, and Shop the Boulevard. Each banner uniquely honors the individuals that represent these themes, so it’ll fun for everyone to ‘Cruise the Boulevard’ and locate many of San Diego’s local celebrities. Of course, what’s an anniversary without a party? For the official unveiling, the Lafayette Hotel’s Mississippi Ballroom will present several local performers featured on the Boulevard banners, including Mojo Nixon, Bart Mendoza, Daniel Jackson, and Gilbert Castellanos. Other performers will include the Little Richards (with Robert Lopez aka El Vez), Miss Erika Davies and Stephen Rey, Daniel Jackson, Gregory Page, True Stories, Robin Henkel, and the Amandas. The spotlight will also be on the local business owners for sustaining and advancing San Diego’s cool urban neighborhoods.
