Based in Ramona, Squarecrow calls itself "a melodic punk band." Founders include singer/guitarist Todd Allen (Regime, Beside Myself), bassist/singer Kevin White (Londons Falling), and drummer/vocalist Daniel Riverall (Broken Fingers).
The first Squarecrow albums were recorded between 2014 and 2017 at Ramona Music Center, a music store with an in-house studio called Afterhours where each member had recorded with their previous bands. A 2016 release, Rammi Jamms, was recorded at Afterhours by Kenny Hill and Todd Allen and included a Smiths cover, "Big Mouth." A split 7-inch released in 2017 featured two songs by Four Lights and two Squarecrow tunes, "I'll Add a Laugh Track" and "Perris, CA."
A fourth Squarecrow album, Before the Sun Catches Us All, was recorded in Sacramento and released by Swamp Cabbage Records and La Escalera Records in 2018, with a video filmed for the track “Syndicate.” By that time, Allen had relocated to L.A., while the other two members remained near San Diego.
"We just released a split 8-inch lathe cut record with our friends Civil War Rust from Oakland," singer-guitarist Todd Allen told the Reader in early 2019. "I cut vinyl records in my living room now, so we’ll be releasing one off singles, as well as working on some ideas for compact disc-vinyl record hybrids for some CDs I have laying around."
