Based in North County San Diego, 1960s-sounding rockers Capital Grey formed in 2011, anchored by Canadian-born Filip Mandaric (drums, bass, keyboard, programming, vocals) and Danny Chau (guitars, vocals).
Chau and Mandaric use machines to fill in the gaps onstage. Says Mandaric, “We take our laptops and plug our instruments into an analog-digital converter. From there, the signal goes straight into the PA system.” They released their debut EP Paint the Town in 2012.
In May of 2012, BBC Radio Kent DJ Sean Rowley in England played their song “Tattoo on Her Shoulder” on his All Back to Mine program, telling his listeners “Capital Grey are a sort of Magical Mystery Tour era sort Beatles-sounding, Syd Barrett Pink Floyd...they’ve got it going on in a psychedelic pop sort of way, and they do it rather well.”
Says fMandaric, “It’s surreal having someone that important talk about you on BBC Radio of all places, but this is what we’ve been working for too. Some people think the music industry’s about luck. I think it’s opportunity meeting ability.”
